Certain breast cancer treatments have been found to make women more susceptible to heart disease. In the October 9 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, a variety of sources for heart disease risks have been identified, such as chest radiation, lack of exercise during treatments and stress. Pamela S. Douglas, M. D., chief of cardiology at Duke University and co-author of the JACC paper, said that the greatest damage comes from a breast cancer treatment mainstay: chemotherapy. Douglas always felt that “the benefit of saving lives outweighed the risks and were just part of the accepted cost.” But with the success of treatment and growing survivor numbers, Douglas and her colleagues are urging doctors to take the long view when deciding on a woman's breast cancer treatment. First treat the cancer, but don't forget about cardiovascular health down the road. Chemotherapy is a systemic therapy that makes use of drugs to treat cancer. Prior to a surgery, chemotherapy may be used both to reduce the size of the breast tumor and to destroy cancer cells wherever they may be. After the surgery, chemotherapy works throughout your system to kill cancer cells that may have spread throughout your body. Chemotherapy affects the whole body by going through the bloodstream. If you read my report The 10 Biggest Mistakes Contractors Make, you should remember that Mistake #9 was pricing your work too cheap. Today, I’m going to show you how to systematically determine the price your prospect is willing to pay based on the service you are offering, the characteristics of the project, and the type of client you are pitching to. Most contractors are CONVINCED they know what their market is willing to pay. Yet, when I get the opportunity to analyze their data collection systems, I discover there is a glaring hole in their information. There is no possible way they could really know the best price to offer a prospect. I see the same problem when looking into contractors’ job costing systems. Most simply do not collect enough data to know how their costs vary by project type and size (Mistake #6). Raising Prices is the Fastest Way to Juice Your Bottom Line The two main reasons contractors offer low prices are: 1. They are afraid they will lose the job. 2. They don’t have hard data to guide their pricing decisions. Fixing the second problem usually eliminates the first. Hard data on past performance combined with ongoing monitoring gives you the confidence to offer higher prices. So let’s get your data collection started. Your goal is to track your market’s willingness to pay for your services. The more detail you track, the more refined and exacting your price guidelines will be. The more detail you track, the more money you will make. Start by copying each proposal and writing down the estimated cost, physical job size, type of services being offered, type of client, client status, and lead source. For client type, note whether you are pitching to a residential, commercial, building owner / operator, property manager, retail space, office building, general contractor, subcontractor, industrial, institutional, or other. For client status, note whether you are pitching to a new customer, existing customer, or referral. Note the lead source. For project size, find an indicator that makes sense for your trade. Areas (e. g. square feet) or volumes (e. g. cubic yards) are the most common. Set up a spreadsheet to capture your data (I have one if need it). Create a column for each data item. Put in columns for the proposal number and name of the project or client. Include a column for proposal status (won, loss, open, budget). Include a column for proposal date. Enter each proposal on a single line in the spreadsheet. Often the best way to get the data into the spreadsheet is to hand the stack of proposals to someone and have them enter the data all at once. Weekly data entry is pretty typical. After you have captured a large set of data you can analyze it and see where your prices need to be. If you crank out a lot of proposals, you may collect enough data in three or four months. If you only create a few hundred proposals a year, it could take more than a year to collect enough data for your conclusions to be valid. Now for the fun part - analyzing your pricing success. When looking for the price guidance, sort and filter your data by work type, client type, job size. Look for visual indication that you’ve found a legitimate and logical trend. Focus on win rates. Do you win 1 out of 5, 1 out of 2, or 1 out of 3? You want to know what mark-up produced the right amount of success. You are looking for success between 25% and 40% depending on job size. The smaller the job, the higher the success rate. The larger the job, the lower the success rate. Competition intensifies with larger jobs. Everybody wants them. Assume that the higher the price of the job, the less mark-up you’re going to get. Almost all buyers become more price sensitive as the total price goes up. Look for validation of that in your data. Price Sensitivity Varies Greatly With the Type of Client You Are Pitching To. Residential customers tend to be the most price sensitive and industrial the least. Always remember the Other People’s Money syndrome. When your prospects are spending someone else’s money, they are almost always less price sensitive than the owner of the money. Use Your Data to Guide Your Price Offers By throwing your data into spreadsheets, graphs and tables, you should be able to create price guidelines for your company. The guidelines will apply as "All things being equal, for this type of job, this size of job, and this type of client, this is the price we ought to be able to win a third of the time." I wish I could give you an exact three step procedure for reaching your conclusions but the truth is that you are often going to have to play with the data before the message becomes loud and clear. Once you have established the standard price to offer, carefully consider the prospect standing across from you. If you happen to be selling to someone who appears to be less concerned with money than other people in his position, then use a higher mark-up. How do you know that he or she might be willing to go higher than normal? Use your sales questions. Those questions will give the prospect a chance to show that their concerns may be over things that have little to do with price. If you are visiting with someone who appears to be extremely price conscious, then offer a lower price than the guidelines recommend, assuming you want the work at that price. Bear in mind that if your data shows a normal client would pay more for the work your prospect may be a bad client (Mistake #2). You want to be winning around 25% of the larger jobs you go after and you certainly don’t want to be winning more than 40% of the smaller ones. If you are winning more than 40% of the offers you extend, in any category, you are either the most masterful qualifier of prospects, or you are grossly under - priced. In my experience with contractors, it’s the latter...and that they are leaving a lot of money on the table!

Someone said: “Writing is either easy, or it’s impossible.” He was lying. I can’t tell you how to finish your book, but I can tell you how I finished mine. Please apply these simple, difficult steps to your writing process. 1. Appropriate aptitudes and psychopathology I’ve always scored highly on the verbal portions of standardized aptitude tests––the SAT, GRE, etc. I’ve always been able to write. I have an obsessive tendency, which adds get-it-done-ness to my personality, as well as a bit of mania for inspiration. Many years of education have honed my obsessive streak to full-blown workaholism. These are necessary, but not sufficient, ingredients of a writing career. 2. Kundalini Shakti and the worst things that ever happened to me In 1975, I began meditating using a form of kundalini yoga. Kundalini is conceptualized as energy coiled at the base of the spine, lying dormant until awakened. When awakened, it moves up the spinal column, purifying the individual’s energy centers and psyche. My experience of kundalini is like sitting on the business end of a cosmic fire hose. It produced ecstasy, as well as kicking out memories of the worst things that ever happened to me. 3. The right circumstances, and motivation becomes sufficient During an extended healing after step 2, I went to a meditation retreat, coming home spiritually renewed and sparkling. Two days later, I had a cataclysmic experience: The plot of a book was injected into my brain in a second. After that, I wrote for nine years straight, completing drafts of nine novels. The drafts are mostly drivel, but they’ll rewrite nicely. My spiritual awakening unleashed my writing and fueled my creativity, also imparting the drive to complete what I started. 4. The material will finish the book The book that I’ve published wasn’t one of my novels; it was a freebie, leaping out of me by surprise. I went to a Native American spiritual retreat, had an incredible experience, and started writing about it. Voila! Three years of single-minded work later, I had a book. (That’s the second retreat to jump-start my writing. Neither was a writers’ retreat. No cogitating for hours about technique or critiquing anyone’s writing. Just spiritual regeneration.) I could not stop until I finished Stepping Off the Edge. The material drove me until the book was published, and beyond, into marketing. 5. Paying dues Would I write better if I an MFA in creative writing or a PhD in literature? Probably, but I’m sixty years old and can’t afford the time. Writing is a skill that demands training. In that, I have paid my dues. I’ve been in writers’ groups for more than ten years. I’ve worked with a number of editors, ranging from great to horrid. I walked away from one publisher and have had my share of scathing critiques. I’ve written queries, gotten rejected, and had “experts” try to scam me. I’ve rewritten, reframed, and thrown out. Had too many migraines and worked myself into a frazzle. I’ve also made dear friends, met fabulous professionals, and finished a book that I love. How did I complete my book? It took all of my craziness and sanity, the worst things I that happened to me, applying myself to wellness with all my soul, and doing everything necessary to see it born: a lot of work, commitment and much love. And a touch of the divine. Writing is not easy. Even so, if your highest and deepest self drives you, it’s impossible not to finish.

The fact that one parent has been the child's primary caretaker is often considered but is not enough to guarantee a custody award. It is not that unusual for middle class parents to spend $60,000 on a divorce and child custody fight. Traditionally, divorce in the United States results in one parent being awarded primary custody and decision making for a child. Rights Each parent shares the rights and responsibility for the care, custody, companionship, and support of their children. Some states, such as Arizona, have fathers rights groups specifically dedicated to helping fathers obtain custody of their children (arizonafathersrights for example). Definitions Custody means that a parent has legal custodial rights and responsibilities toward the child. Joint child custody means that both parents have the legal custodial rights and responsibilities toward a child. Joint custody allows both parents to have a say in the child's upbringing. There is no evidence to support that a presumption of joint custody is in the best interests of children. A study found that only when parents were still actively fighting did joint custody exacerbate children's feelings of being torn between parents. However, when both parents favor joint custody, it can be a good solution for the children. Some parents have chosen a joint-custody arrangement in which the child spends an approximately equal amount of time with both parents. Some states award joint custody in which the judge simply divides the child's time between the parents. Joint custody does not mean simply alternating where the child lives from time to time. In fact, there may be legal joint custody, but the child may live with only one parent. Legal child custody includes the right to make decisions about the child's education, religion, health care, and other important concerns. A child may be placed in foster care while a custody case is pending. Legal custody means the right to determine the child's upbringing, including education, health care, and religious training. Physical custody and residence means the routine daily care and control and where the child lives. Physical child custody is awarded to one parent with whom the child will live most of the time. In most cases, both parents continue to share legal child custody but one parent gains physical child custody. There is also a presumption that it is in the child's best interest to be in the custody of a parent over a non-parent. Visitation rights allow the non-custodial parent (the person without child custody) time to spend with their child. A common arrangement is that one parent gets custody of the child and the other parent is given visitation rights.
